Physical Therapy and Common Workplace Injuries
Certain jobs carry a higher risk of injury, which is why different types of physical therapy are available to those who become injured. It is helpful to become familiar with some of the most common injuries, as well as how a physical therapist may address them.
Physical therapy for workplace injuries
Outlined below are a few common workplace injuries that require physical therapy to manage, remedy and treat. Additionally, the most appropriate physical therapy method is also discussed for each.
One of the most common workplace injuries is a muscle strain. This can result from constantly lifting heavy objects and failing to take the proper breaks during the workday. Most commonly, muscle strains occur in the back and neck, and they often require treatment in order for any of the symptoms to begin to improve.
Physical therapy for muscle strains may include special exercises to relax the muscles and get them back to normal. Little by little, patients should expect to regain full mobility and function, which will be necessary in order to return to their workplace.
Slips and falls
Another one of the more common workplace injuries are slips and falls. A slip or a fall is highly prevalent due to the fact that it can happen anywhere and at any time, including on wet floors inside of an office or on a construction site after raining. Slips and falls often require an urgent care visit to ensure the person is not seriously injured. However, past urgent care, extensive physical therapy might be needed in order to address the resulting injuries. Physical therapy may include low-level walking exercises to ensure the hips, legs and gluteus maximum are performing appropriately.
A concussion is another workplace injury that can occur anywhere. The most common cause of a concussion in a workplace is a dropped object or a fall resulting in hitting the head. Physical therapy for concussions is usually not necessary, however, a few days off is most appropriate. In the event that the neck or facial area was also affected then physical therapy may be required, depending on the level of pain and any dysfunction.
There are many jobs that require employees to drive during work hours. Thus, auto accidents are another one of the most common workplace injuries. It is important to ensure all employees are properly licensed when operating any type of vehicle for work. In the event that an auto accident occurs, physical therapy may be necessary to address injuries, such as whiplash. Whiplash can cause an immense amount of pain and dysfunction in the neck and head region.
Physical therapy for whiplash includes gentle massages, neck exercises and sometimes even, chiropractic care.
